Alimta® is used to treat certain forms of prolonged and mesothelioma. Only used in hospitals.


Dosage

Available as powder for solution for infusion, which is administered in a vein after reconstitution.

  • The treatment is individual and tailored according to the effect, partly by the degree and extent of adverse reactions.

  • Works by inhibiting the conversion of folic acid. The agent thus interferes with the metabolism of the cell, e.g. by inhibiting the build-up of DNA (the cell's genetic code) that is crucial to the cell's function and survival.
  • The half life in the blood (T?) is approximately 3.5 hours

Pharmaceutical forms

Powder for concentrate for solution for infusion. 1 vial contains 100 mg or 500 mg pemetrexed (as disodium salt).


Special warnings

  • Alimta® should be used with caution in poorly functioning kidneys and bone marrow.
  • Vaccination with live vaccine should be avoided.

Using other medicines

It is important to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.
  • High doses of NSAIDs (anti-rheumatic and painful agents) increase the effect and enhance the side effects of Alimta®. In particular, long-term NSAIDs should be avoided from 2-5 days before to 2 days after treatment with Alimta®.
  • Caution should be exercised when co-administered with penicillin or probenecid (antidiabetic agent).

❓ Is Alimta chemo or immunotherapy?

👉 Pemetrexed is a type of chemotherapy. It is also known as Alimta. You might have it as a treatment for: pleural mesothelioma (cancer of the outer covering of the lungs)

❓ What does Alimta do?

👉 Alimta® (pemetrexed) is an FDA-approved chemotherapy drug. It is approved for pleural mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancer. For pleural mesothelioma, pemetrexed is used in conjunction with cisplatin. The combination of pemetrexed and cisplatin may extend life expectancy for patients.

❓ Does Alimta shrink tumors?

👉 Goals of therapy: If metastatic disease is present (cancer has spread to other areas of the body), carboplatin + pemetrexed is given to shrink tumors and decrease symptoms from lung cancer.

❓ What are the side effects of Alimta?

👉 Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, stomach upset, changes in taste, constipation, mouth sores, and tiredness may occur. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can be severe. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medication to prevent or relieve nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

👉 Vitamin B12 is to be given 1 week before your first dose of pemetrexed, with doses of vitamin B12 every 9 week thereafter. Folic acid and vitamin B12 are used to minimize some of the side effects of pemetrexed.

👉 Studies have shown that when pemetrexed is used alone hair loss (alopecia) occurs in less than 6% of patients. If it used with other treatments, such as cisplatin, hair loss may be greater, in up to 12% of patients.
