Ameluz is a skin remedy for the treatment of certain types of skin cancer and precursors.

Active substances

5-Aminolevulinic Acid (5-ALA)


Application

Ameluz is used to treat:

  • precursors of certain types of skin cancer (actinic keratosis) in the face and scalp and in larger areas of the body
  • basal cell carcinoma (basocellular carcinoma), which is a particular type of skin cancer

Use only in a hospital or in a dermatologist.


Dosage

Available as gel.

  • Adults. The skin area to be treated is prepared by gently removing dandruff and crusts to make the surface more susceptible to treatment.
  • Usually an approx. 1 mm thick layer of gel on the area using a spatula. Then cover the area with an airtight bandage for 3 hours.
  • Lubrication near the eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears and mucous membranes should be avoided.
  • After cleansing the skin with alcohol, the area is irradiated with red or daylight.
  • The effect of the treatment should be evaluated after 3 months.

Note:

  • Ameluz may only be lubricated by health professionals.

Usually the side effects are mild or moderate and depend on the type of lighting used during treatment. Symptoms may last between 1-4 days after treatment.


Should not be used

Ameluz should not be used

  • by known hypersensitivity to 5-aminolevulinic acid or the other ingredients of the gel
  • by known hypersensitivity to photosensitivity (porphyrins)
  • if you suffer from the rare hereditary diseaseporphyria, which manifests itself in colic-like, severe pain in the stomach, accompanied by nausea and vomiting
  • If you have other skin conditions that flare up or worsen, you are exposed to light.

Pregnancy

Should not be used due to lack of knowledge.

Works by accumulating in the affected skin cells. When the skin area is then illuminated by laser or daylight, oxygen radicals are formed which adversely affect the affected skin cells.


Pharmaceutical forms

gel. 1 g contains 78 mg of 5-aminolevulinic acid (as hydrochloride).


Special warnings

  • Avoid getting sun in the treated areas and surrounding skin for approx. 48 hours after treatment.
  • Ameluz must not be used in bleeding skin areas, in areas affected by other diseases or on tattoos.
  • The gel contains soy protein. Caution for allergy to soy or peanut.

Using other medicines

It is important to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.
  • Concomitant use of other skin remedies should be avoided during treatment with Ameluz.
  • The side effects of light treatment may be increased by concomitant use of herbal remedies, diuretics (thiazide diuretics), insulin release agents (sulphonylureas) or certain antibiotics (sulfonamides, quinolones and tetracyclines).
