Application
Erythromycin "Panpharma" is used to treat infections with bacteria that may be affected by erythromycin, eg:
- respiratory infections in people who are hypersensitive to penicillin
- chlamydia
- certain types of pneumonia
- otitis
- severe cases of pimples.
Dosage
Available as powder for solution for infusion, which is administered in a vein after reconstitution.
The dose depends on the nature and severity of the disease.
Powder for solution for infusion
- Adults. Usually 1 g per day divided into 2-4 doses.
- Children. Usually 15 mg per kg body weight per day divided into 2-4 doses.
Note:
- Reduced dose in very poorly functioning kidneys.

Should not be used
Erythromycin "Panpharma" should not be used for:
- Hypersensitivity to macrolides
- Certain forms of cardiac arrhythmias.

- Works by inhibiting the metabolism of the bacteria and thus their propagation.
- The agent is effective against several different bacterial species than ordinary penicillin and is thus broad-spectrum.

Powder for solution for infusion. 1 vial contains 1 g of erythromycin (like lactobionate).
Special warnings
Erythromycin "Panpharma" should be used with caution:
- In any treatment with an antibiotic, the bacteria may become insensitive (resistant) to the used agent and any other antibiotics. Erythromycin "Panpharma" is broad-spectrum, and the risk of developing resistance is therefore greater than with ordinary penicillin.
- You will often notice an improvement already after two days, but you must continue treatment after the doctor's instructions.
- In case of malfunctioning liver.
- The rare muscular myasthenia gravis may be exacerbated.
Using other medicines
It is important to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.
- Erythromycin "Panpharma" must not be taken if you are being treated with:
- bromocriptine (anti-Parkinson's disease)
- certain cholesterol lowering agents (atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin)
- certain means of organ transplantation (everolimus, siolimus, tacrolimus)
- certain fungicides (fluconazole and itraconazole)
- pimozide (antidiabetic agent)
- ebastin (antihistamine)
- ergotamine (migraine).
- Erythromycin "Panpharma" may increase the effect of:
- alfentanil (analgesic)
- certain tranquilizers (alprazolam and buspirone)
- bromocriptine (anti-Parkinson's disease)
- carbamazepine (epilepsy)
- ciclosporin (agent for organ transplantation)
- felodipine (high blood pressure)
- glucocorticoids (adrenal gland hormone)
- quetiapine (anti-psychosis)
- sleepers (midazolam, triazolam and zopicloin)
- theophylline (asthma agent).
- Erythromycin "Panpharma" can rarely increase the effect of:
- digoxin (cardiac agent)
- warfarin (blood thinning).
- Erythromycin "Panpharma" may reduce the effects of other types of antibiotics (penicillins and cephalosporins).
- Concomitant use of voriconazole (fungicide) may affect ekg.
- At the concomitant use of phenprocoumon (anticoagulant), additional blood samples are taken at the beginning and end of the combination treatment.
- Co-administration with vinblastine (cell-killers) increases the risk of side effects from vinblastine.
- Concomitant use of sertraline (anti-depression) may cause psychiatric side effects.
