How do I get rid of a barley in the eye?

Questions:

Dear Network Doctor,

I strongly suspect that I have had barley. My problem started for about a week ago. It began with irritation and dizziness in my left eye, and the following day there was clearly swelling, redness, a small dot or bud at the eyelid and irritation. The swelling is diminished but the dot is still very clear and very annoying.

What is the treatment of barley grains and how long does it take to get rid of it?

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely, S.

Dear S,

Bygkorn is a benign disorder, most commonly seen in children and younger people. Sugar sickness, reddish hair color, and oily skin can make the disease more chronic. There are two forms: the outer barley that sits in the eyelash hair follicles and appears as a red bump on the eyelid skin, and the interior where the redness is especially on the mucous membrane on the inside of the eyelid and where the inflammation is in the sebaceous glands of the eyelid nerve. Both modes can be painful in the acute stage, but it usually helps if and when the hole goes on.

The treatment is local and consists of cleansing with lukewarm saline on the eyelid edge followed by antibiotic ointment. It may take months before the last swelling has disappeared, but you should only treat as long as your eyelid is red or there will be yellow bruises between your eyelashes. Common hygiene seems preventative, and mascara should not be used in the acute phase.

The prospects are good for healing with or without treatment, but it often takes time, and one can consider puncturing or eliminating it by surgery. The last solution weakens the eyelid mechanical stability, if done more than a few times, so beware of this.

(If older people can not get rid of a barley, one should suspect a rare form of cancer in the cartilage plate and its glands (Meibom's carcinoma)).

Yours sincerely
