I have taken on birth control pills, are mini-pills a good option?

Questions

Dear Network Doctor

I'm on my pill and I have a minor problem.

When I started on the pill, I weighed 57 kilos, and in a short while I weighed 61 kilo and I can not get rid of the kilos again.

In addition, I have stretches on my inner thighs, so I'm not very happy about my body anymore.

I eat healthy, I practice exercise several times a week, and my weight just gets rid of, and I'm really sorry.

I have read that you can take something called mini-pills, as there are less hormones in it.

Would this possibly help me to get back my old weight?

Yours sincerely

Dear Questions

Pills and weight have been a recurring topic since the pills were introduced for the first time. It is a context that is extremely difficult to decode or confirm, as many women start up and use this treatment in periods of their lives where changes are already made with the weight.

Over the years, of course, an incredibly large amount of experience and data has been gathered for birth control pills, and there is apparently no basis for attributing treatment to a significant change in weight. You know that there is less fluid accumulation in the body when you start hormone treatment, and it is in the order of one to two kilograms of fluid. Liquid, which, moreover, disappears from the body again after discontinuation of treatment.

What we know as a pill is a combination of two hormone types; estrogen, which is the female sex hormone, and gestagen, which are bleeding regulating. Pills are found with different compositions of the two hormone types.

There is no doubt that some patients respond more strongly to treatment than others do, and that is also the case with you. It would make sense to change the treatment, and one obvious option could be to switch to mini-pills, as you suggest.

Mini-pills do not contain estrogens. Another option could be to switch to another generation of birth control pills. Here, however, you should focus on the risk of blood clots, a risk that increases if you are overweight, smoker and exposed to blood clots. It is always an individual balance.

A treatment that is badly tolerated should in principle not be accepted (unless there are no alternatives!) So you should talk to your doctor about changing the treatment.

Yours sincerely
