What are light products?

When you call a product for light or light, the comparison, according to the Food Code, should refer to a typical product of similar nature. That is, a similar common product. A traditionally sugary product can be called light or light if it contains 50 percent less sugar compared to the standard product. This does not necessarily mean that the product is free of sugar and it can still contain many calories. The energy distribution must always be stated in the nutrition declaration on such products, and it is important to make clear how much you can save on the calories in the individual case.

Is it good to eat light or light when you want to lose weight?

If you consistently replace sugar with non-fat alternatives, you will lose weight. However, a study from the Food Directorate suggests that many people simply eat extra large portions of the light products, and that does not help the weight. Occasionally, light products of dressings and salads still contain significant amounts of sugar, possibly replacing parts of the fat. Therefore, check the product statement and cut down on the use or avoid them if they are still highly calorie-containing.

Sweeteners can be divided into two types:

  • • Sweeteners that sow roughly as much as sugar and can fill in the product they are used in. They are often called sugar alcohols.

  • Sweeteners that are many times sweeter than sugar.

How does the sweetener work?

The taste buds are located different places on the tongue arranged in some small 'nodules' (papillae). When a sugar molecule comes into contact with areas on these 'nodes', a signal is sent to the brain. Here it is recognized as the experience of something sweet. Similarly, sweeteners that come into contact with these areas on the tongue can give the brain a similar experience of something sweet. Since sweeteners are not identical to sugar, some people will find that the substance tastes sweet but may have a bismag such as a metal taste or a sour taste.

Various sweeteners

The most commonly used sweeteners are saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, cyclamate, sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol and most recently erythritol.

Common to saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium and cyclamate is that it is artificially manufactured substances that do not look like common sugar chemically. These substances have a sweet taste, which can be several hundred times more powerful than plain sugar, and is used, for example, in soda.

However, sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol are chemically related to sugar (sugar alcohols). These sweeteners used in chewing gum and sugar-free liquorice, on the other hand, do not harm the teeth.

The good solution to diabetes?

Sweeteners can be a way in which diabetics can satisfy the need for something sweet. But here too there are some limitations. Sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol are to a certain extent converted to sugar in the body, and therefore diabetics should still be a little wary of using them.

Slimming sweeteners?

Items that are sweetened with sugar alcohols are rich in energy. Since the sweeteness of some of the substances can be less than traditional sugar, the products sweetened with sugar alcohols can actually be extremely energy-efficient. As a rule, sugar alcohols will be difficult to digest, and most of the calories pass directly through the system. This is among other things the reason why producers on sugar-free liquorice warn that a larger intake can cause a bad stomach. Erythritol differs from the other sugar alcohols by being well absorbed into the blood, but without being burned and excreted again through the kidneys.

Does sweeteners give hunger?

A major US survey from 1990 tried to clarify whether the sweeteners aspartame and saccharin even made people hungry. It could not be confirmed, but the way the food was served was the more crucial for the participants' appetite.

Are there side effects with sweeteners?

Some sweeteners have gotten reputation for being directly dangerous. For aspartame (Nutra Sweet), a lot of studies have been done for possible adverse effects. Many of the studies disagree with the harmful effects of aspartame, which may be due to the fact that it is very difficult to make good and comparable documentation. However, Aspartam should not be given to people with F?llings disease, as these patients may cause severe neurological damage. Other sweeteners (acesulfame potassium, saccharin and cyclamate) have in some experiments given cancer in laboratory animals.
