Motiron® is a drug for narcolepsy and disturbance of attention, activity and impulsivity (ADHD).

Application

  • Motiron® is used in the rare diseasenarcolepsy, This manifests itself in a sudden irresistible sleep tightness which can cause numerous daily attacks of short-term sleep.
  • The agent is also used for the treatment of disorder, activity and impulse (ADHD) disorder. Motiron® should only be used for ADHD when treatment is initiated by a physician with particular knowledge of the treatment of ADHD.

Dosage

Available as tablets.

  • General initial dose of methylphenidate: Most often 5 mg (as tablets) 2-3 times a day or 20 mg (as modified release capsules) once a day.
  • The dose is increased by 10-20 mg weekly.
  • Normalmaintenance dose 0.5-1.0 mg / kg body weight / day. The dose should not exceed 2.1 mg / kg body weight / day (or a total of 90 mg per day).

Adults

  • General initial dose of methylphenidate: Most often 5 mg (as tablets) 2-3 times a day or 10-20 mg (as modified release capsules) once a day.
  • The dose is increased by 10-20 mg weekly.
  • maintenance dose. Great individual variation. The optimal dose depends on the individual's sensitivity to the substance. It is therefore necessary to increase the dose individually. Maintenance dose will in most experience be 30-150 mg per day. In rare cases higher doses may be required.
  • There will often be a need for the dosage to ensure effect throughout the monitoring period.

Note:

  • Experience is missing for older than 60 years and children under 6 years.
  • To avoid sleep disturbances, the last tablet should be taken at least 4 hours before bedtime and the capsules should be taken appropriately early in the morning.

narcolepsy Adults. The dose is individual. Usually 2-3 tablets (20-30 mg) a day divided into 2-3 doses. The last dose should not be taken later than 6 hours before bedtime.

  • Nervousness and insomnia often occur at the start of treatment.
  • Abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting usually occur at the start of treatment and may be reduced by taking the medicine with food.
  • Growth inhibition can be seen as a common side effect of prolonged use in children.
  • A number of side effects are only seen in adults (inflammation of the stomach mucosa, decreased sex drive, motor disorder, toothache and thirst) or seen with higher frequency in adults (decreased appetite, sleep disturbances, shaking, peripheral cold sensation, shortness of breath, nausea, dry mouth sweating and fatigue).
  • The drug may cause embarrassment (euphoria) and may give rise to abuse and addiction. This is seen most frequently when using tablets that release methylphenidate rapidly in the body.
  • At increases in dose - especially if done without the doctor's instructions - there may be a risk of developing psychoses with confusion, anxiety and paranoid reactions.

  • If you suffer or have a history of certain types of manic episode disease
  • by suicidal ideation
  • by nervous eating (anorexia nervosa)
  • if you suffer from cardiovascular disease or have had a cerebral hemorrhage or blood clot
  • If you have increased metabolism
  • by tumor in the adrenal gland (pharyochromocytoma)
  • at elevated pressure in the eye (green throat).

Pharmaceutical forms

Special warnings

  • The drug should be used with caution if:
    • You have an increased risk of blood clots in the brain or brain bleeding
    • you have or have had a cardiovascular disease or if some of your immediate family suffer from cardiovascular disease
    • You have previously had convulsions
    • You have an abuse of alcohol and / or medicine
    • one suffers from involuntary muscular movements (motor tics)
    • yourself or some in one's closest family have Tourette's disease (a neurological disorder with involuntary traits and the outburst of sounds).
  • If you experience anxiety, agitation, aggression, suicidal thoughts or symptoms of psychosis or mania, consult your doctor.
  • It is recommended that you check the blood pressure and pulse before and during treatment and be checked for symptoms of mental disorders. In some cases it may be necessary to take blood samples or take etecg.
  • If you experience cardiovascular symptoms (eg palpitation, shortness of breath, chest pain triggered by exercise) during treatment, consult a doctor.
  • ADHD: In children, treatment should be evaluated every six months. One possibly. Pause in treatment should only be planned after careful consideration as the risk of relapse is increased. When treating adults, the advantages and disadvantages should be carefully considered before any break.

Using other medicines

It is important to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.
  • Motiron® must not be taken if you have been in treatment with MAO inhibitors (anti-depressant or Parkinson's disease) within the last 14 days.
  • Drugs that stimulate blood pressure (pressurized substances) together with Motiron® may cause high blood pressure.
  • The effect of antihypertensive drugs may be reduced.
  • Motiron® may alter the effects of certain blood thinning agents, certain anti-convulsive agents, and certain anti-depressant agents. Sudden death has been seen in combination with clonidine (anti-migraine and heiners).
