My 6 year old daughter has strong hair growth on her back, legs and arms

Questions

Dear Network Doctor

I am writing about my daughter who is 6 years old. She is dark-haired with brown eyes, and is born with a strong hair growth on the arms, legs and back. We thought it would disappear with age, but she has now reached an age where she has become aware of her hair growth.

My question is whether it disappears with age or whether we can do something about it? Here I think of bleaching? It's especially the back that makes her slightly different from her second age. Her parents are Danish and we are both dark-haired. Her little sister is light blonde and does not have the same hair growth.

Yours sincerely, JG

Dear JG

Strong hair growth is usually genetically conditioned and, in other words, is entirely normal for the person concerned. And it's far more frequent, seen more because of the hair color and is more pronounced in dark hair. However, if hair growth is very strong, you are advised by a child specialist to rule out an ill-health condition.

With regard to hair removal, this can be done by a dermatologist who usually uses laser treatment or local treatment. Normally, it is a good idea to wait until the children have grown up, partly because they can decide if they want to do the treatment, and partly because it is unnecessary to use full anesthesia for the type of treatments in children. And anesthesia still has side effects, although today we use far better anesthetics and surveillance and 10-15 years ago.

Yours sincerely

FAQ - 💬

❓ Why does my 6 year old have body hair?

👉 The reason for it is most likely genetics — if you or your child's other parent had a lot of body hair as a toddler (or someone in either of your families did), your toddler simply "inherited" the body hair. Body hair is often darker, and therefore more noticeable, on children with darker complexions.

❓ What causes excessive hair growth in children?

👉 What causes excessive hair growth? Typically, higher-than-normal levels of male hormones lead to excessive hair growth. These can be due to multiple underlying medical conditions, certain medications, a family history of the disorder or it may be idiopathic (cause unknown).

❓ Is it normal for 6 year olds to have pubes?

👉 It's not uncommon for young children to show certain traits associated with puberty, including some pubic hair, underarm hair and the beginnings of breast development, said Dr. Paul Kaplowitz, who led the American Academy of Pediatrics report.

❓ Do 6 year olds have hair on their legs?

👉 Many kids have hairs on the legs, but some are very noticable to the point it is a problem. My son has a hairy back and legs although not extreme, i would not have to think twice about getting rid of them if it caused bullying.

❓ What are the first signs of puberty in a girl?

👉 When your daughter starts to go through puberty, her gonads (ovaries) and adrenal glands (glands that sit on top of the kidneys) release hormones. These hormones cause the first signs of puberty, which are breast development, body odor, underarm hair, pubic hair and acne (pimples).

❓ At what age do girls get hairy legs?

👉 Females will also start to notice more hair growing in places such as their legs and arms. At around 12 years old, on average, females will begin to see hair growth under the arms.

❓ What age do girls get hair on legs?

👉 At around 12 years old, on average, females will begin to see hair growth under the arms. Pubic hair will start growing along the labia and will gradually become thicker, curlier, and cover a larger area of the vulva. In the final stages of puberty, pubic hair may grow around the top of the thighs.

❓ What causes excessive hair growth in girls?

👉 Hirsutism is linked to hormones called androgens. It can happen if the level of these hormones increases or if your body becomes more sensitive to them. The most common cause is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This is a condition affecting the ovaries that can also cause symptoms such as acne and irregular periods.

❓ Why is my daughter developing so early?

👉 For most children, early puberty starts for no known reason. It can run in families. Sometimes there is a problem in the brain, such as an injury, a tumor or an infection. Early puberty can also be caused by a problem in the sex glands (testes or ovaries), the thyroid gland or the adrenal glands.

❓ What are the signs my daughter is going to start her period?

👉 Although there's no one right age for a girl to get her period, there are some clues that it will start soon. Typically, a girl gets her period about 2 years after her breasts start to develop. Another sign is vaginal discharge fluid (sort of like mucus) that a girl might see or feel on her underwear.
