Older travelers

Age sets no absolute limits for taking part in travel activities, but there are a number of important issues that one should consider and assess before the expedition begins.

What conditions should older travelers pay particular attention to?

insurance

Anyone traveling outside Denmark should at least be insured against sickness, accident, death and home transport. However, despite the near reading, the terms of the insurance can be difficult to understand correctly. Many travelers have therefore had to experience bitterly that their interpretation of the applicable rules was wrong and that they themselves had to pay for relationships that they thought they were insured against. This applies both inside and outside the EU. For example, a trip on a trip outside the EU, especially in the United States, can quickly rise to hundreds of thousands of Danish kroner

What insurance conditions apply to travel within the EU?

  • The yellow health insurance card: This can be used in Greenland and the Faroe Islands, as they are part of the Danish health system.

  • The blue EU health insurance card: This entitles you to public treatment of acute illness or damage to travel on an equal footing with the country's inhabitants within the EU as well as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. It can be ordered free of charge on bourgeois service and must be taken on the journey.

Whether you have the blue EU health insurance card or not, you have to pay home transport yourself in case of illness, injury and death. Therefore, it is important to draw a travel insurance covering these conditions before commencing their journey.

It is also not easy to get a refund. Charges for treatment while staying abroad through their home municipality. It is therefore important to always save the invoice and documents.

What insurance conditions apply to trips outside the EU?

It is important to take out insurance covering unlimited treatment abroad, as a hospital stay outside of Denmark can quickly cost more than what the insurance covers. Even though a cover of up to a million kroner sounds a lot, it's not necessarily enough, for example, to be hospitalized abroad and to have a hospital transport home. It is therefore important to always check that you have signed a travel insurance covering unlimited treatment and home transport.

However, travel insurance covers only acute illness and injury that occurs during the trip. Therefore, in case of chronic illness and in a number of other circumstances, a so-called pre-authorization from his travel insurance company must be secured.

What is a pre-approval?

A pre-authorization is a written permission to travel issued by the insurance company's doctors. You must have a pre-authorization if you are chronically ill, have previously been seriously ill or have / have been ill and have changed their medical treatment for the past half year before departure. If you do not have this pre-approval, you may risk having to pay for hospital stays with more during the trip even if you are insured.

Here are a number of examples of situations where the traveler can not expect to be covered and therefore should always ensure written prior approval:

  • In case of chronic diseases (such as cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, epilepsy, diabetes). Basically, any disease / condition for which you are regularly subjected to regular medical and / or hospital treatment and / or are in permanent treatment with some type of medicine.

  • If you have been hospitalized within the last six months prior to departure, you have been referred to a specialist or other supplementary examination, have changed their medication or have been given new medicine.

  • If you have not consulted a doctor for an illness, have refused treatment, have interrupted treatment or have failed to check out.

  • Any situation where during the journey there is a certain possible risk of bloody or worsening of a previously known disease state.

  • In certain chronic or serious diseases (such as cancer), despite the restrictive rules of the insurance company, special agreements may be made through relevant patient associations.

If you are in doubt as to whether you need a prior approval, you should always contact your travel insurance.

Cancellation

A cancellation insurance covers if you get sick or injured before travel and must cancel it. Then you get covered the entire amount of the trip. It is therefore always a good idea to take out a cancellation insurance and a good idea to subscribe to it in the same insurance company where you have travel insurance.

The general state of health

The general state of health may in some cases cause certain destinations, modes or activities to be discouraged. Talk to your doctor if necessary.

Blood clots

Older people have a general increased risk of developing blood clots if they do not move for a long time. Especially during long journeys (especially in airplanes where space is tight), it is important to walk around for about ten minutes once or twice a hour.

You should also wear compression stockings that increase the function of the venipump, thus improving blood circulation in your legs. In the case of air transport in excess of eight hours, it is advisable to book an interlining trip as an older person.

dehydration

Older people are very sensitive to fluid loss and deficiency. Longer flight times therefore require an increased fluid intake as the humidity in the cabin is typically only 8 percent.

Similarly, older drinks should drink plenty of fluid at hot destinations, especially if humidity is high or fever, vomiting or diarrhea occurs. It is recommended that you at least occupy between 2.5 and 3.5 liters of fluid a day and take extra salt through food. If there are other special conditions, such as tropical heat, fever, vomiting or travel diarrhea, fluid intake should be further increased.

Solar combustion as well as heat, cold and altitude climate represent other potential risks for older travelers. It is rare that actual tropical diseases play a role for travelers. However, it is a good idea to be vaccinated with your own doctor against flu, and possibly also against the so-called pneumococcal pneumonia if you are over 65 years old. Of course, you should also take malaria medicine if recommended for the place to visit.

Travel Check List for Older Travelers:

  • Is the health in accordance with current travel plans (including mode of transport and duration of transport)?

  • Can the relevant and necessary insurance terms be met immediately or a pre-approval must be secured.

  • Is the destination chosen? How are the climatic conditions on the spot: Heat, cold and moisture?

  • Is the hotel chosen? Are there difficult level differences and many stairs? Are toilet conditions acceptable? Is there a 24-hour reception at the reception?

  • Is the healthcare system (doctor / hospital) at the destination well functioning and reasonably accessible?

  • Is there a possibility for a fast home transport by air? Or you should first be transported several hours by boat before arriving at an airport. This is the case, for example, on many of the Greek islands.

Practical travel advice

  • Always have the phone number of the travel insurance company at hand. In case of illness with need for medical care / hospital treatment, first contact the travel insurance company's emergency center. Via this you can get instructions on which clinics and hospitals are recommended and receive payment guarantees, etc. The travel insurance company will follow up on the "case" until the problem is resolved.

  • Always carry sufficient amounts of necessary and 'solid' medicine in your hand baggage. At least for the duration of the journey plus a few days' delay. The suitcase may be delayed or disappeared at the airport.

  • Take photocopies of passports, health insurance cards, driver's licenses and travel insurance and deliver them in a suitcase, hand luggage and in the wallet or have the documentation available via the internet. In the event of theft of the original passport, it will facilitate the expedition of a new passport on the embassy or consulate if you have a copy.

  • Always bring a photocopy of the above personal papers when traveling outside the hotel. In case of a traffic accident, it can significantly facilitate identification and communication.

  • If you are in a position to orientate yourself and recognize places in a foreign environment, it may be a good idea to follow other travelers, rather than go out on their own. If you have limited language skills, it should also be included in the choice of the destination.
