Xalcom® is used in certain forms of green star (open-angle glaucoma), where other agents do not work sufficiently.


Dosage

  • Usually 1 drop in each eye once a day in the morning.

Note:

  • Close the eye immediately after dripping each drop and squeezing a finger at the inner eyelash for a few minutes. Then you keep the drug in the eye for a long time and reduce the systemic side effects.

* These side effects have been seen during tablet treatment with certain cardiac agents (beta blockers). Xalcom® contains timolol, which is also a beta blocker, and if timolol is absorbed in the bloodstream (systemic effect), it may rarely cause the same side effects as tablet treatment. To avoid systemic side effects, close the eye and press a finger at the innermost eyelash for a few minutes after ingestion.

Special warnings

Xalcom® should be used with caution:

  • by severe arteriosclerosis in the legs
  • in highly regulable diabetes
  • in severe unstable asthma
  • with a wide range of eye diseases.
  • Xalcom® can also exacerbate the rare myasthenia gravis muscle disease.
  • As eye drops contain benzalkonium chloride, they can discolour soft contact lenses. Contact lenses must be removed before ingestion and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting contact lenses.

Using other medicines

It is important to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.

  • Xalcom® may increase the effect of antihypertensive agents and enhance the effects of other agents against increased pressure in the eyes.
  • The drug may increase the effect of antidiabetics (anti-diabetes agents) and hide symptoms of decreases in blood sugar (hypoglycaemia).
  • In addition, Xalcom® may lead to drop in blood pressure and low heart rate if given concurrently with certain agents for depression (fluoxetine and paroxetine).
Note: If you are going to have surgery, tell your doctor that you are using Xalcom®.
